Saucony Guide vs Ride: which do you actually need?

The short answer: Buy the Ride unless you have a specific reason to buy the Guide. The Guide is for runners who overpronate — whose feet roll inward through the gait cycle in a way that causes or could cause discomfort. If you have not been told you overpronate, or run comfortably in neutral shoes, the Ride is the correct choice.

The key question

Have you been told by a physio, podiatrist, or gait specialist that you need a stability shoe? If yes — buy the Guide. If no — buy the Ride.

Do not buy stability footwear on instinct. Many runners assume they need stability because their arches are low or their ankles roll slightly. This does not necessarily mean they need a medial post.

What the Guide adds

The Guide uses the same PWRRUN foam as the Ride with a denser medial post on the inner side of the midsole. This limits excessive inward rotation. For runners who do not overpronate, this addition changes the feel without adding benefit.

When Guide becomes the clear choice

You have been recommended a stability shoe professionally. You have run in neutral shoes and consistently experienced knee pain on the inner side. You have run in neutral shoes and experienced arch fatigue or shin splints linked to gait.

Verdict
Ride first. Guide only if there is a specific stability reason. When in doubt — get a free gait assessment at a running specialist before deciding.
